Memory and Trauma

It’s a fact: 60% of men and 50% of women suffer from at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Yet many might not describe an incident that removed their power and rendered them helpless as “traumatic.” What’s more, scientists and psychologists are beginning to study generational trauma, not personally experienced, but embedded in the body from past harms.

In BYSTANDERS, I’m exploring how a person who has lived through the trauma of extreme violence might respond.

In this fascinating podcast, The Cognitive Bias podcast host David Dylan Thomas talks to developmentalist Mike O’Bryan about the nature of trauma and trauma-informed care. They explore how trauma can influence how we think about school, community development, and policing.

I especially respond to the title: “Trauma and Putting Humanity at the Center.” Shouldn’t we do that with everything?

It’s a remarkable listen, and I recommend it!
