Adventures in Athens

David and I spent the late afternoon climbing up to and wandering around the Acropolis. With Athens’ daytime temperatures in the high 90s, we were grateful to have scheduled our visit for 6 pm.

Our local guide, Eva, was fantastic. In addition to being a fount of knowledge about Athens art and history, she had a lot of opinions, especially about philosophy and religion. We chatted about theatre, noting that many Greek classics center on a female protagonist. We both admire Antigone; in fact, that play was an inspiration for my drama “Without Mercy.” And we both think Medea went too far in murdering her children, which doesn’t allow us to identify with her.

I find it fascinating that Greek amphitheaters appear to always have been built adjacent to hospitals. Archeologists who find one, typically dig on to find the other.

All in all, an excellent adventure!
